The Brotherhood of Saint James Men's Group is often called upon for the heavy lifting tasks involving cleaning and maintaining the church sanctuary, parish hall, and grounds. Their meetings are also a great time for men of all ages to learn, pray and have fellowship with one another. St. James was chosen as the group's patron saint because he is the son of St. Joseph.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
• We had a fun outing at the Saint Arnold Brewing Company in downtown Houston on Saturday, June 25th.
• The Brotherhood of Saint James Men's Group held a fund raiser Fish Fry after Liturgy on Palm Sunday, April 17th. Proceeds went to the men's group altar ministry which includes purchasing items needed in the altar area.
• The Brotherhood of Saint James Men's Group had a movie afternoon Saturday, March 5th. They watched and discussed 'The Island'. The credits describe the film as "The best representation of Orthodox monastic life ever portrayed on film."
• The Men's Group met on Jan. 29th for a time of food, fellowship, and a talk by Fr. Joseph...
Father Joseph opened with prayer and a reading of the life of Saint James, brother of the Lord.
Father Joseph then talked about his vision for the men’s group. An area of ministry that Father would like for us to take up is support and care of the altar. Items that the men’s group could help obtain via fund raising and work include:
• Liturgical items – bread spear, need a more sturdy one. About $80
• Chalices need repair and polishing
• Altar furnishings:
- Built in cabinets, two needed. $350 each in materials
- Sink and vanity – approximately $500
• Candelabra for the altar – approximately $725
• Chandelier for the Chapel
The men agreed that this would be a good area of ministry and support.
Mike Kendall reviewed, on behalf of Russell Boyer, the need to help with the 2012 Parish Life Council that Saint Joseph is sponsoring. There are many opportunities to assist and a sign up sheet is in the fellowship hall hallway.
Jim Coody then led a discussion on the need to hold a Church workday for the whole Church (men, women and kids!). A possible day is Saturday, February 26th after a Saturday Liturgy.
We also discussed social get together ideas. They include Frisbee Golf, Bowling, tour a brewery or winery, visit a monastery, and movie nights. Some of these could be fundraisers also.
The men also discussed possibly doing a fundraising Lent dinner.
The next Men’s Group event will be a movie night at the fellowship hall. Details forthcoming.
